Brush Off The Cabin Fever And Try These Children Activities This Winter

Wednesday, January 19, 2011

For as long as the winter season is, there are seemingly an endless amount of hours that parents need to fill with fun activities for children. With the colder, shorter days, cabin fever can set in and with that, boredom. From sledding to arts and crafts, board games to building snow forts, there are plenty of wintertime activities for children (and for adults) and plenty of memories to be made in the process . Below are a few ideas you might want to try:

- Build Frosty The Snowman in your yard. Before going outside, get a basket and fill it with supplies that will being your snowman to life like a carrot for his (or her) nose, buttons, a hat, scarf, etc. If you have kids who tend to bicker during group tasks, you might want to consider letting each build a snowbaby in his or her image.

- Go ice skating as a family at the local rink or skating pond.

- Going Out Sledding is one of the best wintertime activities for children. So find a big hill and have a family race to the bottom! Putting the kids in charge of taking photos and video is another way to keep everyone engaged and from getting bored.

- Take a nature walk in the woods or snowshoe and see if you can identify different animal tracks through the snow.

- Making holiday wreaths out of leaves and pine cones from outside is a great activity for children who love to craft.

- Crafty kids might also love making holiday cards. Some kids might like to make the cards with their hands using construction paper and others might want to make a photo project on the computer. Either way, it’s a great way to keep them busy and engaged.

- Cooking together as a family is one of the best winter activities for children. On a side note: if you struggle to get kids to eat their veggies, have them cook a meal with veggies in it. Kids are actually far more inclined to eat any meal that they helped to create. Of course, baking cookies and frosting cakes is a lot of fun for kids too. These even make great grandparent gifts.

- Check out the events calendar at your local library or community center. You could sign everyone up for a storytelling hour or take a class or two in arts and crafts, painting, drawing and more.

- Last but not least, consider having a family game night. This is one of the best wintertime activities for children and families since, whether it’s with a video game or a board game, the family is interacting and spending time together.
