The Do's And Don'ts Of Effective Parenting

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

As parents, it is normal to want your children to grow into responsible, happy and well-balanced adults. They also want to have children who will one day become successful and productive members of society.
For this to happen, parents need to learn about parenting skills that can help them teach their children the necessary life skills that will turn them into the adults their parents want them to be one day. As such, you need to learn about what you need to do and what you shouldn't do when it comes to developing these kinds of skills. First is communicate with your children regularly. You need to let your children know and feel you are interested in them and would like to get to know them; you need to LISTEN to what they have to say and ask them how their day went.

Another thing you should do is be the adult you want your children to grow into. Be a role model to your children because they will copy everything they see in you. You should also be encouraging, even though it can be a challenge some of the time. If you want to see total transformation in your kids, allow them to experience failure - even the smallest ones - and encourage them to get back up and do it again. You should trust your children too. You should leave them to make their own decisions and choices, just let them know you trust them and their capabilities and won't get in their way but will always be there if they need your help.

Of course, there are also things you shouldn't do, if you want to raise healthy happy children. First of all, don't set unrealistic goals and expectations. While there is absolutely nothing amiss with having hopes and dreams for your offspring, positive parenting, just so you know does not involve living your unfulfilled dreams through your children, so you should never set unrealistic expectations or goals for your kids. Another thing you need to avoid is negotiating with your kids over something they are supposed to do. Never promise material rewards for helping household chores or finishing homework on time, these are instances when you need to be firm and clear about the importance of fulfilling responsibilities, not because they can expect something in return but simply because fulfilling tasks are what responsible members of society do.
