Tips for Dealing With Alzheimer's Disease in Your Marriage

Monday, May 21, 2012

It's a wonderful thing when a married couple stays together long enough to grow old together. However, as we get older, we have a tendency to develop a range of health problems. Many of these problems affect the brain, with one of the most common being Alzheimer's disease.

This is a particularly terrible disease that can cause your partner to exhibit a wide range of neurological and behavioral problems. You can expect your marriage to become a lot more difficult to handle. Here are a few tips on navigating the tough times with a partner suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

You can be certain that it is difficult to care for someone who has this condition. You will have to spend a lot of time doing so. You will have to become much more involved as the condition progresses and gets worse over time.

In the beginning, you may be able to handle all of the work yourself. Over time, you may become overwhelmed as things will get slightly more difficult to deal with. Getting one or more of your children to help is an option if any of them live nearby.

If you have the finances or insurance policy to hire a professional, then you should consider doing so. Hiring a registered nurse will be a great help since they will come into your home for a few hours each day. If permanent care is needed, then home care provider can even move into your home permanently.

Alzheimer's patients can suffer emotional mood swings and dramatic behavior changes. It is in everyone's best interests to avoid confusing or irritating Alzheimer's patients. You certainly don't want them to live in a household that is full of noise. Whenever you watch TV or listen to the radio, make sure that the volume is turned up too loudly.

Keeping in touch with loved ones is also important for Alzheimer's patients. Try to touch your partner whenever you can. You can do something simple such as putting your hand on his or her knee or hand while you're talking.

Medical care will be very important for your spouse. If there are any appointment scheduled, then make sure that your spouse goes to them. You should also attend yourself so that you can learn what's going on firsthand from the doctor.

When we get married, we vow to stay committed through sickness and in health. If your partner is suffering from Alzheimer's, then it can make living up to these vows much harder. Stick by your spouse's side though, since he or she will definitely need you during this time.
